It's carefully selected background music designed to make the time go faster and increase employee production.  If you don't HAVE this for them, they will be listening to the radio, calling in to answer disk jockey promo's or playing music that is annoying to others or that is not appropiate in your business.

Just as important as music in the work area, consider television for your employee lunchroom.  It makes for a friendly work break environment and Bloomberg News, Fox News Channel or Headline News channels are all short and to the point.  Plus, employees won't be talking about their problems!
